Adaptation strategies

Review engineering design standards

Engineers and climate change researchers should collaborate to identify the climate parameters that are critical to infrastructure design, and the research needed to enable the engineering profession to amend current design standards. The engineering profession should constantly review design standards and amend these as uncertainty about climate change reduces (1).

Assess flood risks

A formal flood risk assessment should be carried out for each critical infrastructure asset. This assessment should identify its frequency of exposure to a hazard, its resilience to exposure and the consequences of its failure. Then the adaptation measures needed can be identified and, by subjecting each to technical, economic, social and environmental analysis, prioritised (1).
