Croatia
Flash floods and Urban flooding
Vulnerabilities
The city of Zagreb flooded in the summer of 2020 because of extreme precipitation. The precipitation that fell in Zagreb for 2 hours was an extreme one corresponding to the return period higher than 100 years. The observed maximum extreme precipitation during 30- and 60-min durations correspond to return period larger than 50 years. The sewerage system of Zagreb could not drain the stormwater from the streets, pointing out the need for its redesign and adaptation to climate change. An analysis of the annual maximum precipitation amount that fell in the region of Zagreb during periods of 30 to 120 minutes showed an increase of up to 2.9%/10 years in the period 1908–2020 (1).
Two major severe flash floods affected the urban areas of the city of Dubrovnik in 2010 (2) and Zadar in 2017 (3).
